Rione Ponte is the richest in historical memories among the ancient Roman villages, it is the village where the first shop window was set up, it has been a meeting point for powerful prelates, rich merchants, politicians and businessmen, as well as coveted women and famous courtesans, and its architecture has fascinated artists of the calibre of Michelangelo and Raphael.
The Rione Ponte was originally an expanse of marshland, a mysterious place, as Ovid mentions in the 'Fasti'. Over the centuries, the district has extended from the left bank of the Tiber, opposite the majestic Ponte Sant'Angelo, which has become its symbol, to Campo Marzio, with streets and squares enriched by some of the most beautiful Renaissance churches and palaces. Even today the district has retained its typical Renaissance appearance, maintaining a perfect balance between past and present.
